Cultivating and monitoring territory
An Ashaninka Indigenous woman carrying a basket of manioc near the Apiwtxa village in Acre, Brazil. In partnership with the Ashaninka and Yawanawá, Conservation International developed a territorial management and monitoring app that is becoming an international reference. In 2023, Indigenous men and women, guardians of the land, patrol the forest to identify threats and protect their territories using apps designed according to each territory’s needs, including versions in native languages. Through technology, they can detect threats, conduct demographic censuses, map biodiversity, activities, and production chains, as well as document traditional knowledge in geographic space. All data collected in the app is georeferenced and accompanied by audio and/or image records.
