Strengthening cooperation for integrated water resources management
The Amazon Project emerged from the need to strengthen cooperation among Amazon countries for integrated water resources management. Proper management of the basin’s waters requires hydrological monitoring and water quality data to prepare countries for critical events such as droughts, floods, and pollution, in addition to supporting the planning of user sectors such as hydroelectric plants, human supply, and waterway transportation.
The project is aligned with the Amazon Cooperation Treaty (1978) and the Belém Declaration (2023), which establishes the need to strengthen cooperation and harmonization of hydrometeorological monitoring systems in Amazon countries.
