El origen de esa característica está en el particular proceso de formación de la sociedad brasileña, que, desde su nacimiento en el siglo XVI, recogió la generosa contribución de pueblos y etnias tan diferentes cuanto los indios autóctonos, los portugueses descubridores, los africanos traídos como esclavos.
