The Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) and the Working Group of representatives of the eight Member Countries decided to resume negotiations for the Regulation on Commercial River Navigation in the Amazon Rivers.
The working group will hold a videoconference on January 20, 2021, to resume the dialogue on this priority and crucial issue for the benefit of the Amazonian countries in relation to the transport of cargo and passengers in the Amazonian rivers, ensuring their users an efficient, safe and regular service. The priority given to this negotiation is a mandate of the Foreign Ministers of the Member Countries, in compliance with Articles III, V, and VI of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty (ACT), which is to guarantee on a reciprocal basis that there shall be complete freedom of commercial navigation on the Amazon and other international Amazonian rivers, observing the fiscal and police regulations in force now or in the future within the territory of each Member Country.
The Regulations will be prepared bearing in mind the importance and multiple functions of the Amazon rivers in the region’s economic and social development process and considering the integrated management of water resources.
