ACTO makes a new call to ICCAN to negotiate a solution on the “.AMAZON” top-level domain

In a letter in response to the CEO of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), Göran Marby, the Secretary General of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO), Alexandra Moreira, urged him to promote the resumption of dialogue with Amazon Inc. in order to reach a mutually acceptable solution on the attribution of the “.AMAZON” top-level domain.

As the most recent move within the extensive correspondence between ACTO and ICANN, starting back in 2017, the letter states once more the Amazon Countries firm opposition to the assignment of the “.Amazon” TLD to the applicant Amazon Inc., without sharing its governance with the Amazon Countries and ACTO itself.

ICANN’s CEO has been trying to put an end to this politically sensitive issue, as a way to prevent further damage to the entity’s image. However, offering no negotiated solution, he will keep facing ACTO’s determination to defend its member´s sovereign right to the Amazon geographical denomination and to the constitutive elements of the Amazonian identity.
