Amazon countries support the Parlamaz reactivation

A first strategic meeting to discuss the reactivation of the Amazon Parliament (Parlamaz) was held virtually, organized by the Senator and President of the Foreign Relations and National Defense Commission of the Brazilian Senate, Nelsinho Trad.

This important meeting brought together accredited ambassadors in Brazil, parliamentarians, authorities from the Amazonian countries, and the Directive staff of ACTO, who fully supported the reactivation of Parlamaz.

Senator Trad recalled that during a working meeting at the Embassy of Ecuador in Brazil, exactly one year ago, and to undertake the task of this reactivation idea was put at stake. Likewise, he clarified that it is responsibility of all South American countries, which that have the privilege of hosting the forest in their territories, to preserve the Amazon biome, as well as the importance of their collaboration for a strong, independent, permanent, and true Amazonian Parliament.

The Secretary-General of ACTO, Alexandra Moreira, thanked the invitation of the Government of Brazil, through Senator Trad, to participate and assist this significant initiative to reactivate the Amazon Parliament: “As an organization, it is an honor and a privilege to briefly present the concrete actions developed -according to the priorities established by the Member Countries-  in this important and relevant territory”.

The ACTO Executive Director, Ambassador Carlos Alfredo Lazary, expressed about the importance of the reactivation of the Amazon Parliament as cooperation means for the sustainable development of the Amazon Region: “It is essential to take advantage of the parliament’s role and energy to improve the image of the Amazonian countries in relation to the international agenda and the vision that international public opinion has about the Amazon ”.

A next meeting with the Parliamentarians from the Amazonian countries will be held on December 21 to define the process towards its reactivation.
