The event was inaugurated by Peruvian President Martín Vizcarra, who said in his opening speech that the greatest challenge facing countries is to combat the devastating effects of pollution, climate change and the extinction of species.

At the congress, the Permanent Secretariat of ACTO (PS/ACTO) will be represented by its administrative director, César de Las Casas and Mauro Luis Ruffino, technical expert of the “Regional project to manage, monitor and control wild fauna and flora species threatened by trade – Bioamazon Project.

During the days of the event, they will share information, knowledge and experiences on the implementation of the Bioamazon Project resulting from the Financial Cooperation Agreement between the German Government and ACTO through the German Development Bank – KfW, implemented by PS/ACTO.

They will also participate in specific events, including: “Aichi Goals 11: Closing the gaps until 2020”, which will present and discuss the evolution of countries and Latin America in meeting the goals; and “The future of nature conservation in Latin America and the Caribbean: the post 2020 agenda”, which will discuss and prepare the decisions that will take place in 2020 at COP15 of the Convention on Biological Diversity. The expert Mauro Luis Ruffino will participate in the panel: “Contribution of protected areas to the conservation of migratory fish”, which will address the issue of a regional project proposal on migratory fish with an ecosystem approach.

In addition, the PS/ACTO delegation will take the opportunity to meet with the partners of the Bioamazon Project.

The Congress – which has already been held in Santa Marta (Colombia, 1997) and Bariloche (Argentina, 2007) – is a space for the exchange of experiences and debates on public policies. It is an initiative of IUCN and the World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA), which brings together social actors to strengthen their capacities to promote protected areas as nature-based solutions to societal challenges.

This event provides an opportunity for government officials, multilateral organizations, local traditional and indigenous community leaders and the private sector to submit proposals that will be transferred before the Convention on Biological Diversity, which will review the Aichi Goals in 2020.
