Brasília, November 6, 2024 – Vanessa Grazziotin, Executive Director of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO), took part today in an important Technical Meeting held in Brasília in partnership with BNDES, the Amazon Development Superintendency (SUDAM), and the Legal Amazon Consortium (CAL). The event’s main objective was to identify opportunities and challenges for sustainable development in the Amazon region, especially in preparation for COP30, which will be hosted in Brazil, in the Amazon, in 2025.
Grazziotin highlighted the Belém Declaration as a milestone in the pursuit of a development model that balances biodiversity preservation with the well-being of local populations. “The Declaration guides our joint efforts, promoting regional cooperation and ensuring that Amazon policies actively include local, Indigenous, and traditional communities,” she stated. She also emphasized the importance of regionalizing investments so that national programs such as the Growth Acceleration Program (PAC), the Crop Plan, and the Ecological Transformation take into account the diversity and specific needs of the region.
The event featured roundtables covering topics from the economic context of the Amazon region to credit offerings and financing access challenges for local production chains. Representatives from states in the Legal Amazon and executives from major federal banks, such as BNDES, CAIXA, and Banco do Brasil, discussed strategies to facilitate access to financing lines that promote job and income generation.
At the conclusion of the meeting, ACTO reaffirmed its commitment to continue promoting sustainable and inclusive development in the Amazon, aligning efforts with various regional and international partners.
