Ministers of the Amazonian countries adopt Declaration of Tena

Brasilia, December 4, 2017.-The Foreign Ministers of the Member Countries of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) adopted the Declaration of Tena at its XIII meeting held in Tena, Ecuador, on December 1, 2017.

In the declaration, the foreign ministers reaffirmed their commitment to the principles, purposes and objectives of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty and to the full sovereignty and rights of the Member Countries over their Amazonian territories.

At the same time, they expressed their support for the new role and mission of ACTO and its Permanent Secretariat in meeting the objectives of the treaty, the protocol of amendment, declarations and ministerial mandates, as well as in the process of revising and updating the Amazonian Strategic Cooperation Agenda (ASCA).

On the other hand, they highlighted the regional consensus to adopt the mechanism of operation of the Amazonian Regional Observatory and the Network of Amazonian Research Centers, as a clear contribution to the strengthening of cooperation in the scientific, technological and innovation areas, as well as in the strengthening of capabilities.

They also reaffirmed the importance attached to cooperation in fighting against forest fires in frontier areas between Member Countries. They also recognized and highlighted the various advances in climate change issues; protection of indigenous peoples in voluntary isolation and initial contact; forest monitoring and deforestation; biological diversity and expressed satisfaction with the various results achieved.

They also reaffirmed their commitment to fighting illegal logging and timber trade, as well as promoting cooperation among countries in the fight against illegal activity.

Together, they renewed their commitment to protecting the Amazon Basin by adapting and mitigating the side effects caused by climate change and other factors that threaten their natural balance. They also agreed on the importance of continuing to promote the implementation of the Sustainable Development Objectives of Agenda 2030, the commitments of the Paris Agreement for the sustainable development of the Amazon Region, such as the Aichi Targets and the Minamata Agreement.

Finally, they thanked the Government and people of Ecuador for their warm welcome and hospitality during the XIII Meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs.
