On November 30th from 11.00 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. (Brasilia time), the Launch event of the Amazon Basin Project-Implementation of the Strategic Action Program (SAP) will be held virtually from the ACTO platform. The event starts at 11:00 a.m. Brasilia and Suriname time, 9:00 a.m. Colombia, Ecuador and Peru time; 10:00 a.m. Bolivia, Guyana and Venezuela time.
The event will be attended by representatives and professionals from the water resources and environmental management institutions of the eight Amazonian countries, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO).
This technical and scientific meeting aims to ensure that the Project’s main stakeholders understand and take ownership of the Project’s goals, objectives and different approaches and methodologies, so that all parties understand their roles and responsibilities within the Project’s decision-making and implementation structures, while presenting the results and recommendations of the Project’s Inception Phase.
At the opening of the event, the methodology to be followed will be explained and the Atlas of Hydroclimatic Vulnerability of the Amazon Region will be officially launched, in Spanish and English. This technical study consists of 60 thematic maps, converging in consolidated maps showing the location of areas vulnerable to droughts and floods in the Amazon Region.
The event will address the following central issues: Implementation of the Strategic Action Program in the Amazon: understanding the background, objectives and approach of the Project; ACTO’s vision and framework for regional action in IWRM; Building community resilience: National Interventions in the Member Countries.
At the same time, activities include presentations on new approaches and methodologies for water management in transboundary basins, as well as on Hydrological and Water Quality Monitoring in the Amazon, including methodologies for satellite monitoring of water resources. The Water Resources and Monitoring Networks Modules of the Amazon Regional Observatory (ARO) will be highlighted by the Permanent Secretariat of ACTO. The event will conclude with the launch of the Amazon Basin Project.
ACTO Secretary General, Alexandra Moreira, will chair the Amazon Basin Project Launch event, about which she said “implementing the measures foreseen in the Strategic Action Program (SAP) is a new opportunity to further strengthen institutional links between the Amazon countries and thus work in solidarity for our region. Together we can do more, the region needs us more than ever”.
