The Amazon’s biodiversity and ecosystem functioning are threatened by a broad range of drivers originating within the basin and worldwide. Here we outline some of the preventative measures required to counter the most important threats to Amazonian biodiversity, using an Amazon-specific adaptation of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Threats Classification Scheme (v 3.2) as the framework for analysis of drivers of change (https://www.iucnredlist.org/resources/threat-classification-scheme).
