ACTO Member Countries establish binational dialogues on health and monitoring at border areas

Puerto Maldonado, August 08, 2017.-  During a week representatives of the ACTO Member Countries participated in the regional meeting and discussed on control and land monitoring of indigenous communities in border regions.

Entre os resultados estão as contribuições para um plano binacional de trabalho entre o Peru e o Brasil, com um componente de monitoramento e de saúde, com a finalidade de iniciar um processo de intercâmbio no âmbito de um novo Memorando de Entendimento entre os dois países.

Among the outcomes of the meeting, contributions to a binational working plan between Peru and Brazil was on the table with a component of monitoring and health in order to drive an exchange process within the framework of a new Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries.

At the meeting Peru and Colombia ratified issues on the agreement which is expected to be signed on September.

Peru and Bolivia also confirmed current agreements on health issues signed by the governments. A preliminary plan of activities was developed by Peru and Ecuador in order to promote a binational agreement for protection of Indigenous Peoples in Isolation and Initial Contact (PIACI).

The regional meeting “Control and land protection and regional health plan for PIACI”, held in the city of Puerto Maldonado, Peru, from August 15 to 21 was hosted within the framework of the agreement OTCA/BID. The meeting was about main issues on land protection and health of PIACI in the border areas. At the meeting, the ACTO Member Countries, specialist in indigenous affairs and organizations (AIDESEP and FENAMAD) made contributions and suggestions for the Health Plan PIACI in the Madre de Dios, a Peruvian state and introduced by correspondent institutes.

On the other hand, thanks to the participation of the local government, Provincial Municipality of Tambopata, support for the actions carried out by the Ministry of Culture in the protection of PIACI was consolidated, through logistics for emergency care.

As part of the regional event, experts and delegates visited the Pariamanu River Control and Surveillance Office of the Ministry of Culture of Peru, where activities were carried out to learn about the region’s reality and the specific methodology implemented for the protection of isolated indigenous peoples in the area.
