August 9, International Day of World’s Indigenous People

On the occasion of the 10-Year commemorations of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) is pleased to publish the “Amazon Regional Guidelines for the Protection of Indigenous Peoples in Isolation and Initial Contact”, and the “Principles and Guidelines for  the Health care of Indigenous Peoples in Isolation and Initial Contact”.

These documents are the results of a consultation process conducted with the ACTO Member Countries (Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela) within the context of the Strategic Framework Program for the Elaboration of a Regional Agenda for the Protection of Isolated Peoples and Initial Contact”. The project was implemented during the period of 2011-2014 and the implementation of the recommendations and results of the project are promoted by the Indigenous Peoples in Border regions project, with financial support from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Member Countries.

The main objective of these tools is to contribute to the awareness and promotion of the rights of Indigenous Peoples in Isolation and Initial Contact in the Amazon Region, involving all society sectors in the Member Countries, and internationally.
