The ACTO is participating in the first International Conference on Illegal Wildlife Trade in Latin America

Brasilia, Oct. 10th, 2019. – The first High Level Conference of the Americas on Illegal Wildlife Trade is being held, in the city of Lima, Peru. This is the first regional meeting to address this issue from a regional approach in the Americas, in order to strengthen and implement alliances among countries for the joint control of illegal wildlife trade.

At the conference, the Permanent Secretariat of ACTO (PS / ACTO) is being represented by the technical team of the “Regional project for the management, monitoring and control of wild fauna and flora endangered by trade – Bioamazon Project”, Ximena Buitrón, project coordinator and Mauro Luis Ruffino, technical specialist. During these two days, they will share information, knowledge and experiences in the framework of the implementation of the Bioamazon Project (Financial Cooperation Agreement between the German Government and the ACTO through the German Development Bank – KfW), implemented by the PS / ACTO and CITES Authorities of Member Countries.

On the first day, the Bioamazon Project coordinator thanked for the invitation and said that ACTO has a history of collaboration with CITES and mentioned the importance of the Bioamazon Project. In addition, she expressed the interest of ACTO in continuing cooperation on these issues and joining national, regional and global efforts.

On the need and the importance of the information, Ximema Buitrón speaks of the Amazon Regional Observatory (ARO). “We are working on the development of the ARO that will allow us to generate information, promote research and data from the region that reflect the efforts of Member Countries to support decisions and actions to and from the region. That is, to improve interoperability between institutions and Member Countries”, she concluded.

The conference brings together authorities from all the countries of America and some invited countries that are in charge of wildlife management.

The plenary. On Friday, 4th, Ximena Buitrón will participate as a panelist in the plenary “Actions for the use and control of the orchid trade, with the purpose of promoting alliances with institutions that act in the region for the prevention and control of illegal wildlife trade, to support the efforts of the Member Countries in the implementation of actions, strategies and initiatives to combat illegal trade in wild species in the Amazon Region. As well, identify opportunities for ACTO in the development of a strategic plan to combat illegal trade in wild plants and animals in the region.

 Bioamazon Project

Its objective is to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of management, monitoring and control of wildlife species threatened by trade in the ACTO Member Countries in order to contribute to the conservation of Amazonian Biodiversity and especially the species included in CITES.
