The Government of Bolivia and ACTO bring together experts, native peoples’ authorities and civil society to address strategic actions for integrated and sustainable water management in the Amazon region

Aug 15, 2023ACTO, Amazon Basin Project

On 17 and 18 August, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bolivia and the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) will hold the Strategic Actions Programme (SAP) Implementation Workshop in the city of La Paz to promote priority actions aimed at strengthening national capacity for Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) in the Amazon Basin, strengthening the capacity of communities in the region to adapt to the impacts of climate change, and ensuring compatible information across the basin for decision-making.

The SAP, agreed and endorsed in 2017 by ACTO member countries – Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Guyana, Suriname and Venezuela – seeks to ensure integrated and sustainable management of transboundary water resources in the Amazon River Basin, considering climate variability and change. Program implementation workshops will be held in each of the member countries to prepare governments and civil society for participatory water governance in the region.

The workshop will bring together relevant national actors in the areas of water management, culture and education to formulate recommendations for the SAP implementation process, identify opportunities for regional collaboration and contribute to the formulation of the National Action Plan – NAP.

The NAP will be a document aligned with national policies and will include, among other actions for the implementation of the SAP, institutional strengthening for IWRM, an IWRM Training Program, monitoring of the basin’s water resources, as well as inter-scientific dialogue and cultural aspects to develop the water theme and climate change adaptation measures in the Amazon Basin.

All SAP and PNA actions will have gender equity as a cross-cutting theme. At the event, professionals working in the area of integrated water resources management and other stakeholders will be trained to incorporate the gender perspective into water-related policies, plans, programs and projects, contributing to women and men having equal access and control over water resources.
