At the invitation of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), ACTO participated, through the Amazon Basin Project – Implementation of the SAP, in the annual meeting of the South American Hydrology and Water Resources Working Group, held in Asunción, Paraguay, from November 29 to December 2, 2023. On that occasion, the WMO representatives expressed their interest in cooperating with ACTO’s Amazon Regional Observatory (ARO), a reference center for data on the Amazon that facilitates the flow and exchange of information between institutions, government authorities, the scientific community, academia and civil society in the member countries.
ACTO’s participation in the WG-HRH meeting took place within the framework of the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two institutions for the exchange of information and consultations on matters of mutual interest, in particular on scientific, technological and development issues, where cooperation can promote the objectives of the parties.
The Senior Specialist in Water Resources Monitoring for the Amazon Basin/ACTO Project, Naziano Filizola, highlighted the possible synergies and potential for cooperation between the WMO’s Hydrological Observing System (WHOS), a platform that facilitates access to global hydro-meteorological data, and the ARO.
“This WMO system can be exploited in ARO’s Water Resources module, which is currently being developed. To do this, we will have to deepen our knowledge of it and assess the ways in which it can interact with ARO,” says Filizola, who is the expert responsible for the future consolidation and incorporation into ARO of the Integrated Regional Platform for Integrated Water Resources Management in the Amazon Basin, within the framework of the Amazon Basin Project (ACTO/GEF/UNEP/GEF).
