Brasilia, July 10.- The Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) and the Fund for the Development of Indigenous Peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean (FILAC) met today with the Minister of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil, Sonia Guajajara, at the Ministry’s headquarters. The ACTO delegation was led by its Executive Director, Vanessa Grazziotin, accompanied by the Administrative Director, Edith Paredes, and the Coordinator of Indigenous Affairs, Freddy Mamani. The Technical Secretary, Alberto Pizarro, participated on behalf of FILAC.
The meeting focused on the commitments established in the Framework Collaboration Agreement, that highlights the joint collaboration to promote the well-being and rights of the indigenous peoples of the Amazon, signed in 2020 between ACTO and FILAC.. The work agenda presented for the period 2024 – 2026 addresses crucial issues such as the preservation of biodiversity, the sustainable management of natural resources, the promotion of interculturality, the broad and effective participation of Indigenous Peoples and the coordination in multilateral international events.
During the meeting, Coordinator Freddy Mamani presented the scope and objectives of the establishment of the Amazonian Mechanism of Indigenous Peoples, an initiative that seeks
to strengthen the dialogue and cooperation between governments and the indigenous people of the Amazon and should begin with the formation of the working group. This
Mechanism, supported by the Belém Declaration and Resolution RES/XIV MRE-OTCA/07, if time permits, will be launched in November 2025, within the framework of COP 30 on climate change, and will guarantee the full and effective participation of indigenous representatives in decision-making that affects their territories and ways of life.
The progress in the creation of the Amazon Regional Platform of Indigenous Peoples and Climate Change was also shared.
Finally, between FILAC and SP/ACTO, within the framework of the multilateral international agenda, will incorporate the issues of the promotion and protection of individual and collective rights of Indigenous Peoples, subject to the aims and objectives of Convention No.169 of the International Labour Organization on Indigenous and Tribal Peoples, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the Outcome Document of the 2014 World Conference on Indigenous Peoples.
