Dec 9, 2025ACTO, Amazon Project

The National Water and Basic Sanitation Agency (ANA), the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO), and the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will hold the closing event of the Amazon Basin Project on December 10. This regional cooperation initiative aims to strengthen the integrated and sustainable management of water resources in the Amazon Basin. The program will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at ANA’s auditorium in Brasília, with the participation of representatives from the Amazonian Network of Water Authorities (RADA) and partner institutions.

During the meeting, the main results achieved between 2017 and 2025—corresponding to Phase II of the Project—will be presented. This phase stands out as one of the most significant South-South technical cooperation actions in the South American water sector. On this occasion, the Executive Summary of Phase II of the Amazon Basin Project will also be launched and distributed, along with the presentation of the new website showcasing the initiative’s products and results, available at https://otca.org/recursoshidricos/.

The final stage of the project focused on strengthening regional cooperation among Amazonian countries and enhancing the technical capacities of national institutions responsible for water resources management. To achieve these goals, activities were organized around three key components:

  • Exchange of information and experiences for water resources management in the Amazon Basin.
  • Support for the establishment of a Regional Monitoring Network enabling the exchange of hydrological, hydrometeorological, and water quality information.
  • Training of technicians and specialists from the region’s water management authorities.

A milestone for regional water cooperation

The Amazon Basin Project is a partnership between ANA, ABC and ACTO, which brings together the eight countries of the Amazon Basin — Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela — with the goal of promoting the conservation of water resources in one of the planet’s most sensitive and strategic ecosystems.

Throughout its implementation, the initiative has become a platform for knowledge exchange, technical capacity-building, and the integration of hydrological and climate information. It has contributed significantly to strengthening water governance and the ability of countries to respond to the impacts of climate change.
