ACTO and amazon countries search support from potential international donors to facing the coronavirus pandemic

Jul 17, 2020Sem categoria

As you are aware, COVID-19 has generated an unprecedented situation in the world, challenging the resilience of all countries and their respective health systems. Unfortunately, the crisis has had a particularly high impact in the Amazon Region, threatening to overwhelm the institutional capacity of our countries to respond to this health emergency.

The complexity and heterogeneity of the Amazon population makes the epidemic especially serious. Gaining access to distant border areas, which are sometimes extremely difficult to reach, requires great logistical means for Government authorities and civil society as a whole, in their quest to cover fundamental needs, especially basic health services for the most vulnerable populations and for the Indigenous Peoples of the Amazon Region.

In view of the above, the Permanent Secretariat of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (PS/ACTO) seeks to consolidate a regional cooperation action framework to support the efforts that the Amazon countries are making in this highly vulnerable region.  The objective is to halt the expansion of COVID-19 and reduce the mortality rate to which the Amazon Region population is exposed.

In this context, the SP/ACTO invites your institution to be part of this effort, collaborating with financial contributions, or donations of individual protection material and hospital medical equipment destined to health units located in the Amazon Region.

We have received, from each Amazon country, contact details of national institutions responsible for handling donations, as well as detailed requests referring to their respective border areas. Therefore, we encourage potential donators to stablish direct contact with these focal points, while at the same time informing PS/ACTO, thus enabling us to form a regional map of the assistance received.
