ACTO and FAO signed memorandum of understanding for joint actions of cooperation to Amazon Region

Brasilia, June, 26, 2018.- The Permanent Secretariat of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) and the United Nations Organization for Agriculture and Food (FAO) will develop, onwards, joint regional cooperation actions on conservation, restoration and sustainable management of natural resources in the Amazon Region, in accordance with international agreements.

To this end, the secretary-general of the ACTO, Alexandra Moreira, and the General Director of the FAO, Jose Graziano da Silva, signed today, the 26th, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), in Roma.

In her speech, Alexandra Moreira mentioned that working in collaboration with the FAO is an opportunity to multiply  positives effects in the Region: “ the signature of this memorandum allows us to strengthen even more the joint

efforts, focused on the sustainable development of the one most important regions  on earth, the Amazon”, she added.

With the MoU signature, the two institutions agreed to develop a joint work to strengthen the capacities, implementation of the project and programmes, among other actions, in areas of mutual interest such as forests, protected areas, fishery and aquaculture, agriculture water resources management, soils, climate change and indigenous people.

Additionally, to implement the MoU, a joint workplan was developed, allowing the execution of immediate joint actions.

The signature of this agreement will expand the collaboration between the institutions and strengthen the ACTO’s current and future regional initiatives, to promote the sustainable development of the Amazon Region.
