Cali, Colombia, October 26, 2024 – During the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP 16) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (OTCA) and the Local Governments for Sustainability network (ICLEI) signed a Letter of Intent to promote sustainable development in the Amazon, focusing on enhancing climate resilience and urban sustainability.
The agreement was signed by OTCA Interim Secretary-General Vanessa Grazziotin and Rodrigo Perpetuo, ICLEI’s Executive Secretary for South America, at the 8th Summit of Subnational Governments and Cities: Taking Action for Biodiversity. Both leaders emphasized the importance of this partnership in advancing the implementation of sustainable public policies and strengthening cooperation among local, subnational, and national governments across the Amazon region.
Vanessa Grazziotin highlighted that this collaboration aligns with the Declaration of Belém, guiding joint efforts toward a sustainable future. “The creation of the Amazon Cities Forum enhances cooperation among local and traditional authorities, fostering a space for intercultural exchange and empowerment of Indigenous and community leaders,” Grazziotin stated. She added that OTCA and ICLEI will coordinate strategies and mobilize resources to address regional challenges in an integrated manner.
Rodrigo Perpetuo noted that this alliance would “strengthen technical and institutional capacities to implement programs and projects aimed at a sustainable urban agenda.” He emphasized that the initiative seeks to integrate local and subnational governments in the Amazon to address key issues such as biodiversity conservation and urban development.
The Letter of Intent outlines specific commitments, including the development of a joint work plan to coordinate actions aligned with regional and international dynamics, and the building of strategic alliances to promote sustainable development. It was also agreed to prepare institutions for strategic discussions at COP 16 and the upcoming COP 30, promoting an inclusive and collaborative approach that fosters the exchange of innovative solutions for the Amazon.
