Brasilia, January, 28, 2020.-  The Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) have signed a cooperation agreement for the execution of the Project “Implementation of the Strategic Action Program (SAP) to ensure Integrated and Sustainable Management of the Transboundary Water Resources of the Amazon River Basin Considering Climate Variability and Change”, with funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

The project will implement some strategic actions of the SAP identified in its previous phase in the Project “Integrated and Sustainable Management of the Transboundary Water Resources of the Amazon River Basin Considering Climate Variability and Change”, which took place between 2011 and 2018.

With funding of US $ 11.7 million, this project will be executed by ACTO between 2020 and 2024 and will focus on SAP implementation. Thus, promoting Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) and to improve ecological, social and economic benefits, allowing ACTO Member Countries to meet their relevant Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the goals of the convention in the Amazon Basin.

Background.  The previous project, executed between 2011 and 2018, provided the countries themselves with a shared vision of the basin, improving their understanding of problems, priorities, needs and common objectives related to the Integrated Water Resources Management.

The main result was a Transboundary Diagnostic Analysis (TDA) throughout the basin that, at the regional level, consolidated nine priority transboundary problems that underpin the SAP.  This was duly supported by the eight ACTO Member Countries before the approval of this project.

Among other aspects, it also promoted the management and joint use of surface and groundwater in Amazonian urban centers and encouraged the integration of climate change problems in the management of natural resources in a transboundary basin.
