Next November 30th from 11.00 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. (Brasilia Time, BRT), in virtual form from the ACTO platform, the Workshop for the Launch of the Amazon Basin Project-Implementation of the SAP will be held. The event starts at 11.00 a.m. time in Brasilia and Suriname, at 9:00 a.m. time in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru; at 10:00 a.m. time in Bolivia, Guyana and Venezuela.
The event will be attended by representatives and professionals from water resources and environmental management institutions of the eight Amazon countries, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO).
This technical and scientific meeting aims to ensure that the main stakeholders of the Project understand and own the goals, objectives, and different approaches and methodologies of the Project so that all parties understand their roles and responsibilities within the decision-making and implementation structures of the Project while presenting the results and recommendations of the Initial and start-up Phase of the Project implementation. In the opening of the event, will also explain the methodology to be followed and will be the official launch of the Atlas of Hydroclimatic Vulnerability of the Amazon Region in both Spanish and English, a technical study that consists of 60 thematic maps, which include maps that show the location of the areas vulnerable to floods and droughts in the Amazon Region.
The event will address the following central themes: the Implementation of the Strategic Actions Program in the Amazon: understanding the background, objectives, and approach of the Project; ACTO’s vision and framework for regional action in IWRM; Building community resilience: National Interventions of Member Countries.
Other activities include presentations on approaches and methodologies for water management in transboundary basins, as well as Hydrological and Water Quality Monitoring in the Amazon, Methodologies for satellite monitoring of water resources and on the Amazon Regional Observatory (ARO): Modules of Networks and Water Resources, which will be presented by the Permanent Secretariat of ACTO. At the end of the activities and presentations, the Amazon Basin Project will be launched. The Secretary-General of ACTO, Alexandra Moreira, will preside over the launch event of the Amazon Basin Project, about which she said “implementing the measures provided for in the Strategic Actions Program (SAP) is a new opportunity to further strengthen institutional links between countries and thus work in solidarity for our region. Together we can do more, the region needs us more than ever.”
