ACTO participate of Forum on the Sustainable Development

Brasilia, April 25, 2019. –The Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) is participating of the third meeting of the Forum of the Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on Sustainable Development that is being realized by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), in Santiago, Chile, until the April 26.

In the ceremony of inauguration, it was showed the importance of the regional agencies role, as the ACTO in the implementation of the Agenda 2030.

ACTO, which is being represented by its administrative director, César De las Casas, on the 22nd, participated as an observer in the Commission of South-South Cooperation, an area where the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean discussed the next steps to strengthen South cooperation.

Following the participation of ACTO in the forum, De las Casas took the floor to welcome the ECLAC and the representatives of the countries and, on the occasion, highlighted the role of ACTO in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, principally through the projects of Monitoring of Forestry Coverage and Integrated Management of Water Resources.

In the peer-learning session, table 4, – statistical capabilities, measurement and georeferencing, De las Casas highlighted some of the main achievements of the Monitoring Project, such as maps of deforestation and land use change, the creation of the seven Observation Rooms in the Member Countries and the contribution of the Amazon Fund / BNDES and INPE.

He highlighted the contribution of the National Water Agency (ANA-Brazil) with the Water Resources Management Project, which will increase the number of hydrometeorological measurement stations in the Amazon Basin.

In addition he also stressed the implementation of the Amazon Regional Observatory (ORA), as a permanent virtual forum that will facilitate the flow of information between institutions and government authorities of the Member Countries, becoming a source of information for the decision made

Finally, De las Casas mentioned ACTO’s interest in working with ECLAC in the development of socio-environmental and Economic Statistical date and indicators for the Amazon Region, with a view to implement the 2030 Agenda.

Forum. This third edition meet officers from more than 70 countries in the region, representatives of civil society, international organizations, the private sector and academia, with the purpose of reviewing the progress and challenges of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda in the region.
