The Permanent Secretariat of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) is participating in the international seminar “Towards Comprehensive Forest Fire Risk Management,” where the Latin American and Caribbean Forest Fire Expert Group (GEFF LAC) is meeting for the sixth time.

GEFF LAC, composed of managers from relevant ministries and agencies responsible for the various phases of fire management (prevention, preparedness, firefighting, and restoration), aims to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and best practices on forest fire management. It uses harmonized information provided by the Global Wildfire Information System (GWIS) to drive strategic actions that minimize the impact of fires and improve fire policies at national and regional levels.

The 6th GEFF LAC meeting is taking place in the cities of Lima and Cusco, Peru, organized by the European Union and the Peruvian Government. The event brings together fire management experts from national fire management agencies in Latin America, along with representatives from the EU/JRC, EU delegations, and international organizations (the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations – FAO, the United Nations Environment Program – UNEP, and the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization – ACTO), to present progress within various working groups and to carefully plan future actions, raising the results obtained to national and international levels.

Representing ACTO, the Environmental Coordinator Carlos Salinas Montes and Technical Consultant Natalia Méndez Ruiz-Tagle presented the organization’s actions on forest fires, aiming to strengthen synergies within ACTO’s Amazon Fire Management Network (RAMIF).
