The Amazon Basin is a complex and heterogeneous region, standing out and recognized worldwide for its variety of ecosystems, richness of species with high endemism and cultural diversity. However, in present times it faces different threats, among which, the main one refers to the loss and degradation of its habitats caused mainly by deforestation, change in land use and the effects associated with climate change. (PAE, ACTO 2018).
To better understand the status and trends of biodiversity and ecosystem services in the Amazon Region, as well as its interrelationships, opportunities and effectiveness of responses to current threats, ACTO coordinated a group of 118 experts from the Amazon countries to develop a Rapid Assessment of the status of the biodiversity and ecosystem services in the Region, following the methodology and conceptual framework of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services – IPBES.
This important Assessment will be a strategic instrument that will provide pertinent, timely and rigorous information for decision-making, strengthening the science, policy and society interface, generated from the participatory contribution of knowledge holders from the Amazon Region, with the aim of strengthening adequate sustainable development processes in the Region and contributing effectively to the implementation of effective public policies, on the basis of scientific and technical data for decision makers, as well as for public managers. This Assessment will provide recommendations based on scientific evidence and other knowledge systems, including the traditional knowledge of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities.
