About the Project

The project “Toward a Better Understanding of the Amazon Aquifer Systems for their Protection and Sustainable Management” (GEF ID 11108) is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) as implementing agencies, and executed by the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO).
Its objective is to generate up-to-date scientific knowledge and promote the sustainable and coordinated management of the Amazon Aquifer Systems (AAS), which span the territories of Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela.

Position: General Coordinator

To ensure proper implementation of the project, ACTO will hire a General Coordinator, responsible for leading the Project Coordination Unit (PCU) and ensuring technical and operational articulation among the participating countries, implementing agencies, and strategic partners.

Main Responsibilities

  • Lead the comprehensive execution of the PCU.
  • Supervise the technical, administrative, and financial team.
  • Ensure the quality of studies and outputs generated.
  • Coordinate with the National Execution Units (NEUs), consultants, and counterparts.
  • Present technical and financial progress reports to ACTO, IDB, and UNEP.
  • Promote gender mainstreaming and the participation of local and Indigenous communities.

Required Profile

  • Degree in environmental sciences, water resources, biology, ecology, administration, or related fields.
  • Postgraduate/Master’s degree in environmental management, natural resources, or related fields.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in management or coordination positions, and at least 10 years in water resources management and sustainable development.
  • Experience in international projects, preferably in the Amazon region.
  • Proficiency in Spanish and English (Portuguese will be considered an asset).

Location

The General Coordinator will be based primarily at ACTO’s headquarters in Brasília, Brazil, with availability to travel to member countries.
