Brasilia, Dec. 23th, 2019.-Delegates from the eight ACTO Member Countries participated in the Workshop on the Amazonian Strategic Cooperation Agenda (AECA), with the aim of advancing in the process of review, joint reflection and participatory construction of the proposal for its update for the period 2020-2030, which allows ACTO to have a strategic document.
The proposal presented in Brasilia, on the two days of the event, December 16 and 17, took into account the latest negotiation draft, the articulation of the AECA with the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development and other international agreements, the Leticia Pact for the Amazon, the challenges that the organization has regarding the financing of new projects, as well as the need for an agenda in line with the current challenges for the Amazon Region, without losing the substance of the mandates of theAmazon Cooperation Treaty (ACT).
Following the proposal, Alexandra Moreira, Secretary General of the ACTO, said in her opening speech, the importance of having a strategic agenda considering the current global scenario. “It is necessary that our agenda can place us in the current debate but also in the current opportunities in favor of the Amazon and thus continue to meet the objectives of the Treaty,” she said.
She also highlighted the relevance of joint work so that ACTO has more international recognition and concluded that this exercise will make it possible to advance the objectives of the Organization.
In the two days of the workshop, the delegates made their comments, presented their contributions and proposals to the working document and agreed on the urgency of having a strategic agenda, which allows the preservation work of the Amazon Region to be continued.
The Secretary General enclosed the workshop, thanking the joint effort made and all the contributions that will contribute to develop a proposal more aligned with the common interests of the Member Countries and with the objectives of ACTO.
Delegates also thanked the Brazilian government and especially the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC) for supporting the workshop.
Among the final conclusions, it was agreed that the Permanent Secretariat of the ACTO will compile all the contributions of the Member Countries to the new proposal and produce a consolidated document that will be circulated to all, until January 30 of next year. Also, meetings by videoconferences were proposed to move forward in the process and the convening of a meeting for March 2020.
