Indigenous Peoples and local communities are the guardians of the forest and of knowledge.

ACTO recognizes the essential role of Indigenous Peoples and local communities in the preservation of the Amazon, and works to strengthen their rights, ensure their full and effective participation, and promote dialogue between ancestral knowledge and public policies aimed at the sustainability of the biome.

This axis is guided by the principles of respect, diversity, and cooperation. It strengthens the voice of Indigenous Peoples and local communities in regional governance and values their knowledge, practices, and ways of life as a fundamental part of the Amazon’s future.

Lines of action

  • Strengthen the collective rights of Indigenous Peoples and local communities, promoting their free, prior, and informed participation in regional governance.
  • Establish the Amazonian Mechanism for Indigenous Peoples (MAPI) as a permanent space for dialogue and cooperation between governments and Indigenous organizations.
  • Promote technical cooperation and the exchange of experiences among Member States on issues related to Indigenous Peoples and territories.
  • Strengthen regional cooperation for the protection of Indigenous Peoples in voluntary isolation and initial contact, respecting their rights and ways of life.
  • Establish the Amazonian Forum of Indigenous Peoples and Traditional Communities as a participatory platform for regional dialogue.
  • Ensure the inclusion of Indigenous and community representatives in the Amazon Intergovernmental Technical-Scientific Panel, fostering integration between science and traditional knowledge.
