Brasilia, July 18, 2016 – In the evening of Friday, 15th of July, as part of the celebration of the 38th anniversary of the signing of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty (ACT), the ACTO opened its traveling exhibition named “Amazonian Cooperation: successful initiatives for sustainable development of the region” and the relaunching of the new institutional website.
This exhibition will be presented in the eight Member Countries and contains eleven infographics showing the ACTO’s ongoing regional activities and the positive impacts in preservation and sustainable development of the Amazon region and in the welfare of its population due to the regional efforts.
Each slide briefly presents the results of the initiatives in the area of environment, monitoring of Amazonian forest deforestation, sustainable management of water resources, biodiversity conservation, protection of indigenous peoples, environmental health surveillance system and support to the social agenda.
The Secretary-General of ACTO, Maria Jacqueline Mendoza opened the event, with the presence of the Counselor Megayla Austin from the Embassy of Guyana representing the Coordination Committee of the Amazon Cooperation Council (CCOOR), the Executive Director of ACTO, César De las Casas and the Administrative Director, Antonio Matamoros.
In the opening speech, the Secretary-General of ACTO pointed out the relevance of the implementation of two important commitments of the Global Environmental Agenda and the Sustainable Development: the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.
“The compliance of these two important international commitments is considered a great challenge for our Amazon region, but also a great opportunity for the role exerted in the global climate balance. Hence, the Amazonian region is considered key in current international debates”, she declared.
She also said that ACTO is updating its Cooperation Strategic Agenda so its thematic axes satisfy the new global scenario under those commitments.
The Ambassadors, Chief of Missions of the Embassies of the Member Countries and other countries and international organizations accredited in Brazil attended the event.
