Key Meeting at COP29 for the Amazon: ACTO and UN Forest Forum Strengthen Alliance

Baku, Azerbaijan, November 12, 2024 – During the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP29), Vanessa Grazziotin, Executive Director of the Permanent Secretariat of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (PS/ACTO), and Freddy Mamani, Coordinator of Indigenous Affairs, held a key meeting with Juliette Biao, Director of the UN Forum on Forests Secretariat. The meeting focused on priority topics related to climate financing mechanisms for the conservation and sustainable management of forests, reaffirming both organizations’ commitment to strengthening cooperation in the areas of forestry and climate.

A central topic was the Forest Financing Strategy, an initiative that ACTO will present at an event in Brasília from December 17 to 19, 2024. They also discussed preparations for the 20th session of the UN Forum on Forests, scheduled for May 2025, and the upcoming COP30 on climate change in Belém do Pará, Brazil, where regional alliances for climate change mitigation and comprehensive management of Amazonian forests are expected to be strengthened.

Participation in the Opening Ceremony and High-Level Segment of COP29

Later, Grazziotin and Mamani attended the opening ceremony and high-level segment of COP29, where they took part in discussions on critical issues such as implementing global financing agreements to address the climate crisis, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and stabilizing global temperatures at 1.5°C. These sessions addressed key aspects of climate adaptation and resilience, including loss and damage, technology transfer, capacity building, and climate justice.

In addition, the significance of the International Year of Glacier Conservation 2025 was highlighted, emphasizing its importance for global climate action.

COP29 is being held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11 to 22, 2024, marking a significant milestone on the road to COP30, which will take place in November 2025 in Belém do Pará, Brazil, where major progress is expected toward conservation and climate sustainability goals.
