Project for the Implementation of the Strategic Action Program (SAP) for the Amazon Basin

Ongoing projects

The SAP Implementation Project is a regional initiative that strengthens cooperation among the eight Amazonian countries in the integrated and sustainable management of water and aquatic ecosystems in the Amazon Basin.

The project translates into concrete actions the priorities defined in the Strategic Action Program (SAP) — a milestone of Amazonian cooperation agreed upon by the countries under ACTO.

Objective

To implement the strategic actions of the SAP in order to strengthen regional water governance, promote the conservation of water resources, and enhance the resilience of Amazonian populations in the face of climate change.

Strengthen the Amazonian Network of Water Authorities (RADA) as a body for technical and political cooperation.
Harmonize and integrate the national hydrometeorological monitoring systems.
Implement regional actions for watershed protection, basin revitalization, and participatory water management.
Develop technical and institutional capacities for the sustainable management of water resources.
Promote knowledge exchange and best practices among national authorities and local communities.

Consolidation of a participatory regional water governance framework.
Institutional and technical strengthening of Amazonian countries.
Improved quality and availability of data on water resources.
Coordinated actions for climate adaptation and environmental disaster prevention.

The project is implemented by the Permanent Secretariat of ACTO, with financial support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implementation by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

It also benefits from the collaboration of national water agencies and environmental institutions from the Amazonian countries.
