Seminar on the 40th anniversary of the Treaty emphasizes the importance of regional cooperation

Brasilia, July 13, 2018. –At the Seminar “Forty Years of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty – Sustainability: A Paradigm for the Development of the Amazon”, Brazilian and foreign experts supported the continuity of regional cooperation around the Amazon. The event, which was requested by Representative Nilson Pinto (PSDB-PA), was held by the Committee on Foreign Relations and National Defense (CREDN) of the Chamber of Deputies last Thursday (07/12) and marked the fortieth anniversary of the signing of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty (TCA).

The opening ceremony counted with the presence of Representative Nilson Pinto, president of CREDN of the Chamber of Deputies; the Secretary General of the Permanent Secretariat of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (PS/ACTO), Ambassador María Jacqueline Mendoza; president of the Alexandre Gusmão Foundation, Ambassador Sergio Moreira Lima, and the ambassador of Colombia in Brazil and chair of the Coordination Commission of the Amazon Cooperation Council of ACTO, Ambassador Alejandro Borda Rojas. A recorded message from Ambassador Rubens Ricúpero was also presented.

The seminar was divided into three panels: “ACTO´s role in implementing the new sustainable development paradigm of the Amazon”; “Technical-scientific cooperation as an engine of integration and sustainable development of the Amazon: potentialities and challenges”; “Sharing Best Practices in Sustainable Management of Natural Resources in the Amazon Basin”.
