The event, that will be held until Thursday, March 16, is an initiative of the National Water Agency (ANA), the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC), the Department of North and South West America (DASSO) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO).
This technical meeting brings together experts on water resources from the main institutions responsible for water management in ACTO Member Countries and it is held with the objective to do a joint evaluation of the implementation process of the Amazon Project’s pilot initiative: regional action in the area of water resources.
The event was preceded by Deputy Superintendent of the Implementation of Programs and Projects of ANA, Tiberio Pinheiro, who welcomed the participants and explained that this meeting will serve to evaluate the results and impacts of the pilot project and contribute to its second phase that should begin soon.
The General Secretary of ACTO, Maria Jacqueline Mendoza, emphasized that the initiative is important for the Organization. “It is a successful experience of South-South Cooperation that has allowed technical exchanges between Amazonian countries and their institutions”, she said. She also reported that the project was presented at the International Water Forum and received as a great experience for the Amazon Region.
For this pilot initiative, six platforms of Data Collections (PCDs) were installed in Bolivia, Colombia and Peru, which are parts of a basic network of hydrometeorological monitoring of 73 points in the Amazon Basin. Telemetric stations and ancillary equipment, an installation and training for the operation of the six monitoring points in the three countries were also purchased.
