The Amazon Basin Project, executed by the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO), is holding the last workshops this week as part of a series dedicated to strengthening governance and water management in the Amazon region. The meetings will be held in Suriname on February 24 and 25 and in Guyana on February 27 and 28, closing a cycle that began last year in the other ACTO Member Countries.

These workshops aim to improve understanding of the principles and guidelines of governance and management of water resources in the implementation processes of the Strategic Actions Program (PAE) in the Amazon Basin. They address the Source to Sea Approach, developed by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), which promotes an integrated vision of river basin management, from the headwaters of the Andes to the estuary of the Atlantic.

In addition, participants are introduced to the Global Water Partnership (GWP) Toolbox, a global platform that offers tools and resources for the effective implementation of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). The adaptation of these tools to the Amazonian context aims to align policies, regulations and legal frameworks between member countries, promoting more consistent and sustainable management of water resources.

With the conclusion of these workshops in Suriname and Guyana, the Amazon Basin Project ( ACTO/UNEP/GEF) successfully concludes a cycle of training sessions, reinforcing the commitment of the Amazon countries to water resources management.
