Cali, Colombia, October 22, 2024 – As part of COP 16 of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CDB), the event “Open Data for Biodiversity: Accelerating Monitoring and Action” was held, organized by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the World Bank. The activity aimed to discuss the importance of open data platforms and information-sharing initiatives for biodiversity preservation.
During the event, Mauro Ruffino, coordinator of the Amazon Regional Observatory (ORA) of the OTCA, highlighted the progress of this reference center in articulating open data on Amazonian biodiversity. According to Ruffino, the ORA has integrated over 20 million records from the OTCA member countries, promoting interoperability and facilitating access to information for decision-making. He also emphasized the importance of the observatory in managing data related to biodiversity and CITES species trade.
The meeting also addressed the integration of innovative tools for data management, such as the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), the Data4Nature initiative, and the Earth Biodiversity Observation Network (GEO BON). The organizers underscored the need to develop inclusive policies that ensure free access to information and promote transparency in data.
In his remarks, Ruffino stressed the relevance of strengthening partnerships and capacities among Amazonian countries to consolidate an open and accessible data management model that fosters regional cooperation and conservation.
