The integrated management of water resources in the Amazon Basin is presented at the International Summit on Water Security

Brasilia, Oct.3rd, 2019– Regional cooperation and water resources management in the Amazon basin was the theme presented by the General Secretary of ACTO, Alexandra Moreira López, at the “International Summit on Water Security: for a participatory and innovative management of the basins “, in Marrakech, Morocco.

Alexandra Moreira presented the main projects of ACTO, in the field of integrated and sustainable management of transboundary water resources, highlighting the challenges and opportunities of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) in the Amazon Basin.

Together, she explained of “ACTO/UNEP/GEF Project”, a successful regional initiative involving the eight Member Countries of ACTO, which is a good example of the benefits of regional cooperation at the basin level. She also highlighted the actions of the “Amazon Project: Regional Action in the Water Resources Area” created in 2012, in the context of South-South cooperation to strengthen the water resources management, promote integration and technical cooperation between countries, which is currently in its second phase of implementation.

Finally, she highlighted the regional initiatives that will be implemented as the “regional project for the protection of the environment and the sustainable management of the groundwater of the Amazonian aquifer” and the “project for the implementation of the strategic action program to guarantee the integrated and sustainable management of transboundary water resources in the Amazon River basin considering climate variability and change”. Her presentation was made in Session 4 “Water diplomacy, international and transboundary cooperation for water security.”

This meeting is held until Oct. 3rd and organized by the Ministry of Equipment, Transport, Logistics and Water of the Kingdom of Morocco, in collaboration with the International Network of Basin Organizations (INBO) and the Global Institute for Water, Environment and Health (GIWEH).
