ACTO and IAI sign memorandum of understanding for institutional strengthening

Brasilia, June 5, 2019.-The  Secretary General of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO), Alexandra Moreira and the Executive Director of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), Marcos Regis da Silva, signed today, June 5, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen the interchange of information, knowledge and cooperation.

The objective is to improve the collaboration and the interchange of the information in activities and initiatives on wealth, climatic change, peoples indigenous and communities local, biodiversity and ecosystems and others subjects related to the global change and the sustainable development in the Amazon Biome.

In the memorandum agreed to increase the capacity for institutional search of the Member Countries of the ACTO to participate in activities related with the scientific networks and the scientific programs of the IAI, strengthen the mechanisms of collaboration, the interchange of information between the institutions. As also interchange of technical information of projects and activities related with indigenous and local communities that incorporate the traditional pertinent livelihoods for the conservation and the sustainable use of the biodiversity.

Likewise, develop mechanisms of communication to facilitate and foster the south-south cooperation and of joint proposals of mutual interest.

The signing of the MOU was held during the 3ª session of the Science-Policy Workshop, of the 27th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the IAI, in Brasilia, Brazil.

workshop. During the workshop, Alexandra Moreira realized a presentation for the representatives of the country parties of the IAI emphasizing the principal initiatives that the ACTO develop in the Amazon Region, in the area of the florets, water resources, biodiversity, knowledge, technology and others.

Also highlighted the wealth and the challenge of the Amazon Region and stressed about the importance of the Amazon Regional Observatory, virtual forum of reference of regional information scientific-technology and of diversity social culture of the Amazon.
