In a conversation with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Monday evening (7/8), in Belém (PA), the Secretary General of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO), Maria Alexandra Moreira López, talks about the importance of focusing the agenda on fighting hunger and environmental crimes. Lula defended the strengthening of the institution that brings together Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela and the cooperation between the countries for the defense and development of the Amazon.
The group of leaders meets this Tuesday (8) and Wednesday (9), around the Summit of the Amazon, where it is expected the adoption of the Declaration of Belem, with priorities to be established for the sustainable development of the region, with a view to the preservation of the forest and the social inclusion of families in the region.
After the meeting, the Secretary General said that, in the current situation, ACTO will have an updated agenda that should prioritize the improvement of social conditions and the fight against hunger and environmental crimes in the region.
“These issues are increasingly part of our agenda,” said Maria Alexandra Moreira López. According to her, in aspects related to the Amazon, countries will act as a bloc in multilateral spaces and arenas.
She also highlighted the need for international cooperation to finance projects and solve issues such as water and sanitation, solid waste treatment, connectivity and health.
The Brazilian president received the ACTO secretary at the hotel where he is staying in Belém for the Summit. He arrived in the capital of Pará in the middle of the afternoon, after participating in an agenda in Santarém, inaugurating an infovia that connects municipalities in the Amazon and Pará from cables installed in the riverbed.
