Brasília, March 19, 2018– Today, March 19, a Framework Cooperation Agreement was signed between Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) and Development Bank of Latin America (CAF), which provides for the possibility of joint work initiatives that promotes conservation and sustainable use of natural resources. The signing, realized during the eighth World Water Forum in Brasilia, was performed by the ACTO’s Secretary General María Jacqueline Mendoza Ortega, and the representative director of CAF, Jaime Holguín.
The first initiative to be supported by the Agreement will be the modeling and studies on Fire Fighting Program in the Amazon countries, which will be developed by ACTO with the assistance of CAF. The process is expected to be concluded by the beginning of the next year. The Fire Fighting Program will be submitted to the GEF funding (Global Environmental Facility – Global Environment Fund), in 2019.
On the occasion, the publication of the Regional and Transboundary Conservation Initiatives in the Amazon Region was also released, available in English, Portuguese, and Spanish. Produced by ACTO with the support from CAF, the document promotes the visibility of successful initiatives and actors in the challenge of strengthening management of national ecosystems of protected areas, aiming to contribute to biodiversity conservation on a regional context.
To the representative director of CAF in Brazil, Jaime Holguín, the agreement allows the elaboration of various initiatives in line with the Bank’s action, as the regional integration and environmental conservation and sustainable use. He observes that “there are much relevant fronts to be worked on with these themes and we will work hard on them to define, in partnership with ACTO, how to bring resources and knowledge to the region”.
