Amazon is one of the regions with the greatest amount of fresh water, so it becomes essential to carry out cross-border conservation actions. In this context, the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) is executing two important initiatives that were presented at the 8th World Water Forum, which is being held in Brasilia, Brazil.
At the forum, a space was provided for the countries to introduce successful initiatives related to the management of water resources, such as transboundary management, alert systems, monitoring and information systems, within the framework of the Amazon Project: Regional Action in the Area of Water Resources. In addition, the initiatives and results from the GEF Amazon Project were also presented. A special edition of the publication “Amazonian Waters” was launched on the occasion, which includes 10 investigations of the hydrographic basins: underground water for urban supply; transboundary cooperation for the sustainable management of water, among other studies.
The “ACTO/UNEP/GEF Project – Integrated and sustainable management of transboundary water resources in the Amazon river basin considering climate variability and climate change”, is a successful regional initiative involving the eight ACTO Member Countries, a good example of the benefits from regional cooperation at the basin level.
The “Amazon Project: Regional Action in the Area of Water Resources” was created in the context of South-South Cooperation in order to strengthen water resource management and to promote integration and technical cooperation among countries. Moreover, this institutional coordination seeks a greater leveling in the installed facilities of the entities involved with the Amazonian water resources, by supporting the installation of a Hydrometeorological Network of the Amazon Basin.
