ACTO leads regional agenda at Extraordinary Meeting of the Amazon Cooperation Council

Aug 21, 2025V Summit of Presidents of Amazonian Countries

Bogotá, August 21, 2025 (@OCTAnews) – Martín von Hildebrand, Secretary General of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO), together with the Director of Territorial Sovereignty of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Javier Pava Sánchez, led the Extraordinary Meeting of the Amazon Cooperation Council (CCA).

The session was attended by delegates from the eight member countries: Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela.
“Colombia, as the host country, draws attention to the Amazon biome not only for its extraordinary biodiversity and its role in climate regulation with the so-called flying rivers, but also for the decisions that must be made by the governments that make up ACTO. This meeting has two central points: the approval of resolutions and the preparation of the Bogotá Declaration, which will be adopted by the ministers tomorrow, August 21, 2025, and subsequently presented at the Summit of Amazonian Presidents,” said Director Pava Sánchez.

Martín von Hildebrand, Secretary General of ACTO, pointed out that the 2023 Belém Declaration has been the roadmap for structuring the work agenda, from which 16 groups were formed with the participation of all countries, created within the framework of the resolutions of the ministers and foreign ministers.

“We are moving forward with our eyes set on COP-30, which represents a key moment of visibility for ACTO. It will be an opportunity to present ourselves to the world as a solid organization, with concrete results and the political will of the eight Amazonian countries. We can already show progress: 47% of the Amazon under protection, a treaty in force and operational, and the experience of two meetings of foreign ministers that have left us with important consensus,” said the ACTO Secretary General.

In addition to analyzing the progress of the Belém Declaration, the decisions made in this space will guide the message and commitments that the region will take to the international stage, reaffirming that the defense of the Amazon is a common cause of environmental justice and solidarity among peoples.
