Brasilia, Oct. 31, 2019– The secretary general of the ACTO, Alexandra Moreira met, today, with the executive secretary of the Minamata Convention on Mercury, Rossana Silva Repetto, in order to discuss issues in which both institutions can collaborate in the future. The intention of cooperation between the Minamata Convention and the Permanent Secretariat of ACTO, for its implementation in the Amazon Region and the possibility of joint work identifying areas to contribute between the two institutions, was highlighted.
Likewise, ACTO participated this week in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in its capacity as observer of the Regional Consultations of Latin America and the Caribbean in preparation for the third meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Minamata Convention on Mercury (COP 3), which will take place from November 25 to 29, in the city of Geneva, Switzerland.
The Minamata Convention on Mercury was adopted at the Plenipotentiary Conference in 2013 in Kumamoto, Japan and entered into force two years ago – August 2017. The objective of this global treaty is to protect human health and the environment from anthropogenic emissions of mercury and mercury compounds. It also includes provisions on public information, environmental education, participation promotion and capacity building.
The consultants of the Technical Unit of ACTO, Marcio Dionisio and Diego Pacheco also participated in the meeting.
