Today, April 22, the International Mother Earth Day is celebrated worldwide, a day we have the opportunity to recognize the interdependence that exists among human beings, other living species and the planet that we all live in, which is our Big Home, our “Mother Earth”.
In the year 2009, the United Nations General Assembly acknowledged that “Mother Earth” is a common term used in various countries and regions to refer to the planet, and we note that some countries recognize the rights of nature in the context of the promotion of sustainable development, thus, deciding to declare April 22 as the “International Mother Earth Day”, through the Resolution A/RES/63/278.
Also, in 2012, the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) recognized that the Planet Earth and its ecosystems are our home and that “Mother Earth” is a common term in many regions and countries.
Later, the Paris Agreement, adopted in 2015, notes the importance of ensuring the integrity of all ecosystems, including the oceans and the protection of biodiversity recognized by some cultures as the “Mother Earth”.
In this context, the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO), formed by: Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela, through its Permanent Secretariat, acknowledges the importance of celebrating this day and informs that it will continue working in the Amazon region promoting conservation, protection and sustainable use of resources provided by our Mother Earth, and generating spaces for dialogue and discussion addressing holistic and integral visions with the objective of contributing to the integral development and sustainable lifestyle and the maintenance of a clean and healthy environment, highlighting the contribution of ACTO for the harmony between human and nature in order to inherit a habitable world for our future generations.
