No Amazonia, no water: climate change in the rainforest

A virtual event will bring in solutions to water and environment related issues in the vital Amazon region.

On the occasion of the SIWI 2020 World Water Week, a virtual event promoted by Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO),United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and  Organization of American States (OEA) will discuss the critical global role of the Amazon Basin in water cycles and as a climate regulator.The crisis in the Amazon Basin opens an opportunity to shift to sustainable development and avoid what scientists refer to as tipping points, whereby the basin and its ecosystem would no longer sustain itself.

The session No Amazonia, no water: climate change in the rainforest will be on Tuesday, August 25, from 10:00 – 10:45 AM EST, on Zoom platform. Simultaneous translation into English, Spanish, French and Portuguese will be available. To join this event, register on this link here

The objective of the session is to present and explore different actions, experiences and solutions to the water and environmental issues in the Amazon Basin, in the context of climate change, supporting the implementation of a strategy for enhancing sustainable development. It will highlight the unique challenges faced by the Amazon region, in the context of the work of key regional and global entities. A call for trans-national coordinated and collaborative action will be concluded to governments, donors and civil society to start working together to ensure a long-lasting protection to the Amazon basin and rainforest.

Panelists

Sergio Campos, from Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), will share his views on Water and Climate Change: Scarcity in abundance and will followed by Alexandra Moreira, General Secretary of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ATCO) and Ricardo Andrade, from Brazilian National Water and Sanitation Agency (ANA).

Other experts to address the topic are Andrés Felipe Sánchez, from Organization of American States (OAS) who will talk aboutWater Diplomacy for Water and Climate; Chantal Demilecamps, from United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), will address the topicAdapting Together: Experience from transboundary basins around the world. Raúl Muñoz, from Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) will comment the speeches and Alexandra Moreira (ACTO) will present her closing remarks after de Questions and Answers session.
