The Secretary General of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO), Alexandra Moreira, participated in the 18th session of the UN Forum on Forests at the United Nations Headquarters. During her intervention, she highlighted the shared regional vision of ACTO and its eight member countries in terms of sustainable forest management. This was demonstrated by the unanimous approval of the Regional Program and its respective memorandum on integrated fire management, with a particular focus on combating forest fires.
Furthermore, the Secretary General emphasized the strengthening of scientific and technical cooperation through the launch of the Amazon Regional Observatory, which serves as a reference center for technical and scientific information on the Amazon region. In the forest sector, ACTO is implementing a regional monitoring system to generate early alerts in case of forest fires, aimed at achieving effective cross-border coordination. They are also developing monitoring systems for forest cover, degraded lands, and other related issues.
