The Amazon basin, which accounts for about 20% of the freshwater flowing into the oceans, depends on a complex hydrological balance that is increasingly threatened by climate change and human pressures. Rising temperatures, changes in rainfall patterns, and the spread of deforestation are already affecting river flows, water quality, and water availability. Experts warn of the need to strengthen river monitoring on a regional scale, integrating data on surface and groundwater. Initiatives coordinated by ACTO seek to standardize protocols and expand cooperation among countries, enabling the prediction of future scenarios and supporting decisions regarding water security, energy, transportation, and environmental conservation in the Amazon.
