The Amazon is at the heart of the planet’s climate balance.

With 20% of the world’s freshwater and the largest continuous tropical forest on Earth, the Amazon biome is essential for regulating the climate, capturing carbon, and maintaining the rainfall cycles that sustain life across the region.

Strengthening regional cooperation is fundamental to address the impacts of climate change in the Amazon through coordinated actions in mitigation, adaptation, risk reduction, and disaster management.

These actions seek to prevent the biome’s point of no return, enhance the resilience of Amazonian ecosystems and populations, and promote sovereign policies grounded in the principles of climate justice and common but differentiated responsibilities.

Lines of action

  • Establish a Regional Cooperation Mechanism on Climate Change to promote joint mitigation and adaptation actions among Amazonian countries.
  • Design and implement regional strategies to prevent and address extreme climate events, such as droughts, floods, and the intensification of the El Niño phenomenon.
  • Strengthen regional water resilience through the Amazonian Network of Water Authorities (RADA) and the integrated management of water resources.
  • Consolidate the Amazonian Network for Integrated Fire Management (RAMIF) to enhance prevention, control, and recovery of fire-affected areas.
  • Promote the integration of science, technology, and local knowledge to support evidence-based climate policies and decisions.
