Tipping Point: Regional and Global Cooperation to Prevent the Collapse of the Amazon

The Amazon is approaching a critical tipping point, where the forest may lose its capacity to recover and shift toward large-scale degradation. This risk is driven by climate change, deforestation, and fires, which intensify droughts and reduce ecosystem resilience. Recent extreme events indicate that parts of the biome are already under stress. Avoiding collapse requires global and regional action, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions, restoring forest cover, and strengthening local adaptive capacity. Regional cooperation, supported by international climate finance, is essential to maintain the Amazon’s ecological functions and its role in regulating climate and supporting livelihoods.
